The ability to use a Cable box remote for limited functions will depend on the supplier of the remote control that your cable company chooses, as many cable companies provide customized remotes with their logos, special feature and functions, such as on demand programming. For example, my cable company supplies an Atlas remote for use with Scientific Atlanta (Cisco) cable boxes. Other cable companies use Universal Remote Control devices and others use one provided by the box manufacturer. The Atlas remote can be programmed for Denon receivers and the volume and some, but all menus can be accessed. However, all sources cannot be selected with the cable remote. In my case, I can select Cable/Sat, DVD and TV internal tuner and smart TV apps, via ARC with the remote, so it is useful on a daily basis, but I need the Denon remote for other source selection, to set up the receiver and to trim levels accessible only by the Denon remote.
