Zone 2 feeds default to straight stereo, allowing Zone 2 to effectively always operate in direct mode from sources which contain straight stereo content. Pure Direct Mode isn't especially Zone 2-friendly, because when the selected source is carrying (for example) a surround sound encoding, lots of information will be missing from the two speaker feed in Zone 2.
