“If I have a virus on my computer, is it likely to affect an external hard drive as well? I plan to bring my computer in to have a virus or viruses removed, and I am wondering it I need to bring the external drive also.”

Virus's can and often do affect any external drives or storage media. I would definitely take anything that you have connected to your computer in to get checked. WiFi router included.
