I never has to stop filming to switch cameras. I just double tapped the back screen when needed and keep the action rolling. Also I understand the heat thing you are referring to. But any consumer grade action camera or DSLR will have the issue with long sessions. The Osmo recommends 2.7k 60fps for best image stabilization. clarity and unit temp. Not sure why you would need to use 720 unless you are trying to make videos for small tablets or phones.

Because of the processing power needed to record all those pixels, I think you would need more than a $400 camera! One that could house heat sinks and maybe a fan/cooling system. These cameras were not designed to be invincible to temperature extremes. What you could consider is is buying a couple more and switching them out as they got hot. Doing that would be much cheaper than spending 1000's of $ on cameras designed to tolerate the heat systematically.
