“I was thinking it could also be charged by plugging it in to my regular cellphone charger when it's plugged in like I charge my phone. That way I wouldn't have to buy a separate wall charger. Any reason that couldn't be done and not damage the Dynex?”

I use my Bluetooth charging cable to charge mine. It has the micro USB connector. It works out well.
