“I just purchased a Dynex display port to HDMI cable 2 hours ago to connect a brand new Dell monitor to a Dell laptop which is only 2 months old. Connections fit but it is not detecting the monitor. Monitor is plugged to power. Drivers installed, nothing.”

Check to see if the monitor has an input switching option. Choosing HDMI would be beneficial in your case. Your laptop may have a function key that turns on/off the signal to an external monitor. Try this as well: 1. With all devices powered on and connected, reboot the laptop. 2. Log in to windows (assuming this is not a chromebook) and go to display settings 3. Click the identify button, hopefully you will see separate numbers on each display.
