Check to see if the monitor has an input switching option. Choosing HDMI would be beneficial in your case. Your laptop may have a function key that turns on/off the signal to an external monitor. Try this as well: 1. With all devices powered on and connected, reboot the laptop. 2. Log in to windows (assuming this is not a chromebook) and go to display settings 3. Click the identify button, hopefully you will see separate numbers on each display.
