Hello there, this is Kelly with Dyson. When your machine is in the upright position, you'll notice that if you lift the wand cap, you'll feel suction. In the upright position, your wand and hose are ready for use with any of the included attachments. When your machine is reclined, the suction will switch over to provide suction at the base of the machine. Best wishes, Kelly Dyson Customer Support
