Yes, it can be and we do that. After vacuuming, the amount of dirt that is picked up (a lot) shows that it works well.

It would be fine you might have to make an extra pass or two. You can use the main attachment on low power and change it to lowest suction and probably wouldn't noticed a difference also and it would clean the carpet perfectly.
