Hello ExPat, This is Miella from Dyson. While we do not recommend placing the unit outside or near an open window (as outside environmental factors can damage the machine over time), the Dyson DP04 Pure Cool is a purifier fan that will work to pull the ambient air in and push our purified air clear of 99.7% impurities as small as 0.3 microns. Therefore, the air it outputs is cleaner than the air coming into the machine. We hope this helps! Miella Dyson Customer Support
