Dryer shuts off after 2 seconds. It is completely cool and acts like it's overheating. Only owned it one month and used less than 10 times. Any ideas on what I can do? null

I bought a dyson dryer 18 months ago. After 6 months it just kept cutting out, like you have described. Dyson replaced it, now 11 months on this one is now doing the same. The dryer is unusable. We can’t be the only ones

I bought a Dyson hair dryer for my wife and it’s run faultlessly for two years. Until now. First the lights flashed (she told me later), then it just stopped. Tried all the filter cleaning tips, toothbrush, lint free cloth etc but it didn’t help. I unplugged the drier, removed the filter cover, removed the torx screws holding the filter, removed the filter, removed the torx screws holding the handle, removed the handle (which pops off the on switch and the cool air button, had to glue them back on), removed the screws holding the inner handle together, popped out the motor/fan assembly, disconnected the push in plug and found the fan was seized as it sucked in hair! How I don’t know, but the fan was jammed with hair! I removed as much hair as I could, then blew the motor out from the fan side with compressed air. If doing this make sure the compressed air nozzle doesn’t touch the fan blades, they’ll damage easily. Once clean, I reassembled everything and it turned on straight away! Has to glue the switches back on but other than that it’s relatively straight forward. You’ll need a number 6 & Number 7 torx driver.

I too have a Dyson Supersonic fuschia that shuts down all the time and I have cleaned the filter many times in accordance with the manual. The small holes are too small in the stainless steel mesh. Particles block the inside and build up. Tooth brushes or even their dedicated cleaning tool does not allow you to clean into the very small holes.
The stainless steel messh should be removable allowing you to brush the build up from the inside if the steel filter...Bad design for anyone using these everyday! While we are on the subject if these units were designed with hairdresser collaboration why didn't Dyson put a click lock on the cold air button for their professional series. I saw 100 + posts from hairdressers asking for it or for the cool button to be placed in an easy to access place? All the hype on this product and it has underwhelmed me...

I used mine for the first time and it shut down after maybe 3 minutes. I let it sit and it started back about 10 minutes later. I am so disappointed. I loved this and saved a long time to actually buy it.

My wife had similar issues with overheating. She loves it when it works but became frustrated when it kept cutting out after short use. I’ve found if you use any type of spray product (hair spray) while using the dryer it will eventually clog the fine wire mesh that is behind the plastic “filter” that screws off. Not sure if it written in the manual, but if you spray and it lingers in the air...it will get sucked into the wire mesh and dry, eventually starving the dryer of air by clogging the tiny holes in the mesh. 

You can carefully remove the fine wire mesh and properly clean it if you are handy...but it is a bit tricky. Once I did this, and removed the built up hair spray that had clogged the wire mesh...it worked like new and wife is happy again. 

Buyers just make sure....if you purchase this unit, using any type of spray product while using will eventually lead to clogging and overheating....

Same exact problem as all the others. There is NO REASON for mine to overheat - I keep it cleaned regularly and now - it just has simply stopped working. Also - if you happen to push the on button a little differently it will switch on very briefly then shut off for 5 minutes - this is without even using it for 5 minutes. Very aggravating! I had an important event to go to and have frizzy hair - so this dryer left me with half-dried frizzy hair. Thank goodness I had my cheap travel dryer with attachment to smooth out my hair.
This dryer is waaaay overpriced considering this fault in design!

Mine is exactly the same, I am on my 3rd and after just a few months it has gone again... I look after it really well. I’m not sure I can ask for another replacement!! Customer service is good but... not what I expect for the price. Luckily I still have my GHD dryer which has never let me down...

I am so Disappointed in this dryer it cost a fortune and it does not last continuously shuts off I now think that my hair is frying because there must be a heating element going out I am extremely disappointed as a professional hair dresser and I will not be selling them or telling anyone to buy one I received mine as a gift. And I was so excited for 6 months !

I'm also on my 3rd professional dryer, the same exact problem. On EACH OF THE 3 hairdryers!! I do exactly what they say to do as far as cleaning the filter and the filter cage. Still overheats and shuts off. For spending twice the amount of money than I would normally, I'd think they'd have q product that can last more than a couple of months!! I'm really upset and I am no longer going to use it or buy another one. It is a pain to have to keep sending it back only to have the same issues again and again. Sorry Dyson, I will no longer recommend your hairdryer any longer.

I’m on my second one and it’s doing exactly the same . My fist one lasted 10 months this one only 7 months. I clean the filter everyday. Very disappointed. I feel embarrassed at asking for another one but I expect more for the price. It takes just as long now to dry my hair S my old £30 hairdryer and I haven’t noticed any benefit to my hair.

I followed MadMaxEngineer's excellent instructions. I also found some hair in the motor (how did it get past that filter with just tiny holes?) but removing it and clearing the fan blades didn't result in the dryer working - still no sign of any power. The metal filter was mostly blocked, despite following the Dyson instructions about cleaning since purchasing the appliance, so I suspect that the dryer had overheated (the nozzle that attaches with magnets showed signs of burning) and caused irreparable damage. That filter should be a part that can be removed and cleaned properly by the customer without needing torx screwdrivers; how can you possibly clean it just by wiping and brushing the outside? Similar to my experience with a Dyson vacuum cleaner: clever design with shoddy implementation and poor build quality. A hair dryer that costs £300 should be something you leave to your kids in your will, not something that packs up in a couple of years. I vowed never to buy a second Dyson vacuum cleaner and I now have the same view about Dyson's overpriced, overhyped and shoddy hair dryer.

I agree that this unit is way too over priced and plagued with design flaws and strange defects, but when it works properly my wife loves it. I read the post from MadEngineerMark and then removed two torq screws to get the permanent filter out. It took several tries to be cleaned using an old toothbrush and some liquid hand soap, and I'm a very skilled technician too. Even after three washes and then drying you could see some of the areas that were still clogged, and my wife barely uses this over-priced piece of crap. My advice is to NOT buy this item and then spend $80-130 at a local Beauty Supply or Salon that sells regular hairdryers that are much more robust and trouble-free than these.

I have owned my dyson supersonic for 3 months, it constantly cuts out. I has no heat coming from the airflow. The filter is clean and I have treated it well due to the price as it was a one off expense I wouldn't usually spend, but heard how good they were, now i wish i hadnt. I have never dropped it, cleaned the filter per instructions regularly. Very disappointed, good job I have a little travel one which cost £4 and I've had for 5 years now and its still working well.
This seems to be an issue many are having. Disappointed and wont be getting it replaced but refunded.

Yes this happened to us and when we telephoned disowns help line they knew the problem but because we were just out of the guarantee they said we could send it in for repair at a cost of 100 pound. It wasn’t an option we would have done so now we will have to look at another make of hair dryer until dysentery fix this defect.

Just bought a supersonic for my wife; Right out of the package the switch only works if you hold it in the on position.  It springs back.  Of course it's not meant to be that way; you cannot use the hair dryer with a finger jammed to hold the switch in the on position.  It goes back to the store tomorrow.  I don't know, given the other gripes if we should choose a different product.

I think I’m on my 4th or 5th one since Tver started making them. Same thing every time they start over heating barely into drying your hair and cut off. Until eventually they just don’t cut in at all. I keep the lint free cloth on all of the so wipe the filter after each use. Then I used a tooth brushed as recommended by the tech at their repair place. None of it matters none of it helps. I’m currently working between two to dry my hair switching as one cuts off to the next. I’ve taken them all to their repair place sent them home fixed and even ran through their “stress test”. Once I get them home maybe a couple days and back to cutting off again. Absolutely love their hair dryer the best when it works. I’m currently on the hunt to find another brand of hair dryer instead of purchasing my 5th or 6th Dyson.

Dyson honors their warranty and they will send you a new one, but I am having the same issue with the two replacements they sent me and I only had one for about a month and the other for three weeks. My first one (purple) lasted 20 months. Both of these are fuscia. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the fly away attachment. Purple one did not come with one.

Same problem. I've had this hair dryer for 2 1/2 years and it started cutting off intermittently a few months ago and now it won't work at all. I've tried the reset button, another outlet, filter is cleaned after each use. On the phone with Dyson now and they are stating that it's no longer under warranty and I should take it to a repair center. Customer service said that when I called the Repair Center to explain the situation and they will advise if the repair will be free or not. When I called the Dyson Repair Center, he laughed and said, "yeah, not sure why they told you that". Nice. I also told the repair center rep that this seems to be a common problem with this hair dryer and he was a real pro with his response of "well that's true with anything. You can lookup any product online and see common problems". Thanks a ton, real professional. For $400, I expected more. Also, the Dyson Repair Center stated I would have to bring the dryer in for a repair assessment and they are located quite a drive away from me. So, yeah Dyson, last time I purchase a product from you. You don't stand behind the quality you tout in your advertisements (on my 3rd and final cordless vac now). Adios Dyson!

I'm so glad I found this discussion.  I received a Dyson as a Mother's Day gift in 2019.  I've used it daily for approximately 15 minutes/day.  In addition, I had cancer in 2021, lost all my hair, and had no need to use it for over a year.  Recently, it began cutting out after a few seconds and red lights flashing.  I clean the filter regularly but cleaned it again.  My frustration is trying to get assistance from Dyson.  Since it was a gift and I had no receipt, they shut down any conversation with me.  It was registered but they kept requesting a receipt.  Needless to say, the entire conversation became unpleasant.  I was told I could take it to for repair, but the closest was a three hour drive. I mostly liked this dryer (the cord is a little cumbersome and I'm not a fan of the ergonomics), but their lack of respect for customers has driven me away from future purchases.

No need to dismantle, in my case. My wife does not use air-borne sprays which clog the fine mesh, but they were still clogged. Simply use a small can of compressed air or blow through with your lips around the unplugged device’s fine mesh filter. Clean the main plastic filter with a tooth brush from time to time. Simples.

Keep filter clean in handle area and make sure you have a safe power outlet. It has a built in breaker for safety, try resetting that as well. Support for Dyson will assist you on whether you need to send it in for an exchange under warranty.
