I just bought the Dyson V11 Torque Drive and after using it for the first time over the weekend I had the same question. The directions were pretty much image only no words so I has no idea if there was a way to keep the button pressed down while vacuuming. I guess I just found out here that there isn't which is a total bummer. Almost a deal breaker for me because I had to keep stopping during vacuuming because my finger hurt SO bad!!! I cannot believe that they didn't make a trigger "stay on feature with the quality of this vacuum I am in shock!!!! I'm extremely bummed about this because it's something you don't think about when purchasing. Bad move on Dyson because I'm sure I'm not the only one that has a cramped hand while vacuuming. Probably returning due to not being able to use this to it's full extent. Maybe the next model will have this feature and I'll purchase again, until then Dyson!!!

I was also very disappointed until I solved the problem with Velcro! Use double sided 3/4 inch Velcro and cut about 1 inch of the hook side. Stick it to the area behind the trigger in the center. Cut a piece of the soft side of the Velcro so that it completely encircles the trigger and overlaps about 1/2 inch. DON'T remove the adhesive and place one end on the center of the mounted hook side of the tape. Thread the Velcro in front of the trigger, pull back and lay it down on the remaining 1/2 inch of hooks. You're good to go. Peel the overlapping end back to release.

I have had my Dyson cordless for three months, and love it. Two mornings this week I woke up with pain, swelling and a clicking sound when I tried to bend my right thumb. Sounds like it’s created a big problem for that joint, which was normal before. Very concerned and hate to give up my Dyson but this sounds like arthritis from holding down the button. It not a big issue if your young but it could become an issue over time.

Yes. I am returning this due to the small size, and I thought it would be easy for my MIL to use. I don’t think she can hold the button down the whole time she’s using it.

The problem for me is 2 fold.

1. Holding the trigger button - this can be corrected by purchasing this item from Amazon. It’s awesome.

2. The weight distribution is more of a problem for me causing severe thumb pain. The weight is too far forward of your hand. The weight should be put more behind your wrist. Very poor design.

Yes, so annoyed with Dyson for this. I get that it's there to save energy, but why not have an option to lock it on OR hold it down? I mean, it's a Dyson, design is SUPPOSEDLY to be their thing. It looks like there are third parties out there selling trigger locks. Blows my mind that a Dyson needs a third party add-on to function. For what you pay, it should do the vacuuming FOR you, not make you spend an hour googling fixes for poor design.

Guys. It’s really simple. USE A RUBBER BAND. I can’t believe you guys are actually hurting yourselves with this thing. Just take a rubber band, cut it somewhere so it becomes a string. Tie it around the area below the trigger. Make it tight. Slip it over the trigger when you want to use the vacuum. Not tight enough? Cut the band shorter and try again. It’s very simple. VERY EASY. 

I know it’s sucks that it came like this but...there is a 5 min solution.

This vacuum is amazing . I love it and my rugs look like new. With Covid 19 had to cancel my maid service so first time cleaning my place in years. Had a traditional dyson but was loosing the suction so bit the bullet and got the V11. Only two issues I can share are 1) not being able to press the button down and lock it on ( finger aches after a while of constant holding); 2) the roller attachment for solid flooring does not come with the $700 vacuum and if you want it you need to buy as an extra. However, after first use I would not give it up!

After several years of using Dyson cordless vacuums & holding the trigger I now have what they call trigger finger. I get severe pain in the first joint of my pointer finger & it locks up on me. I never have any problems with my joint prior to using this vacuum. I’m extremely frustrated that Dyson has not improved this feature. Every other cordless vacuum has a way to turn it on & off without having to hold the trigger the entire time for it to work. Dyson has the best power by far as far as cordless vacuums go but now I have severe finger pain & a joint that is locking up on me so I have no choice but to walk away from Dyson.

You would love mine. It runs from the moment you pick it up until the battery is dead. I am waiting to hear from support on a solution. This is my 3rd Dyson cordless. The trigger pull is very light. In my experience, it is more of an effort to release the trigger than to hold it.

Yep, you have to hold the trigger button down, it takes some getting used to, but it’s not awful. Definitely helps keep the battery life, so you only use when you need.

I am a longtime Dyson Vacuum owner and couldn't wait to get my Dyson V11 Outsize. Wow, was I ever disappointed in the inability to use it without holding down the trigger. The vacuum works great, like any Dyson, and is beautiful. But, this trigger thing was a HUGE disappointment for me. Just using it the first time was a painful experience, so I switched to my left hand, but obviously harder to steer (as I am a righty). I have had 3 had surgeries in the last few years, 2 for trigger finger and one for carpel tunnel, so the issue with this trigger was hard for me to deal with. Sadly, I decided for the health of my hand, I would have to return the vacuum. Then I read here about the velcro solution posted here by another person. I will certainly give it a try before I return the vacuum of my dreams.... If the velcro doesn't work, my husband is working on a solution as well. I hope it can be resolved, as this vacuum is terrific otherwise. As for the trigger being this way to 'extend' battery life, that is not a deal breaker for me, as I have 2 batteries. Dyson should rethink this trigger problem and either give folks an option for 'on/off or the weird trigger they stuck us all with. I will certainly be contacting Dyson, they need to hear from their customers so they can work on fixing this flaw.

Had I known that the on button had to be manually held down constantly while in use I would never have bought this, I have arthritis and it is impossible for me to hold down. Dyson’s reasoning for this is way off base, people know enough to just turn it off when not in use. MAJOR FLAW

yes, but there are ways around it. i had a car accident which left me in a wheelchair and i have poor hand dexterity, there are ways to use a lock out there. amazon is your friend

Yes you do I bought a Dyson for the first time last year and I find it disappointing. I like the ease of getting it out for a quick flick around in my small bungalow but I’d definitely isn’t as good as my old Miele cylinder vac. Holding the switch down all the time is very annoying!!

Everyone! I was asking this very same question and had just about decided, after reading about everyone's frustration, that I would NOT purchase the Dyson V11 Torque vacuum because having to keep the trigger depressed the entire time would, I knew, be unbearable.

So, I read further reviews on this issue and someone recommended the Amazon LANMU Trigger Lock which is compatible with most Dyson V11 models and, at present, is $9.99. It's a little red attachment that seems, having watched the informational video, to solve this problem.

Haven't bought it yet, but I am going to give it a try! I hope this info may be helpful to others!

Yes but I don't find that an issue. It does not make vacuuming that more difficult. I have over 2600 sq ft to vacuum and it's a breeze. I don't find holding down a button that difficult. I would not let that sway me from how awesome a job the vacuum does and the ease of use.

We speak to our owners frequently and they tell us that cordless vacuums have changed the way they clean. We hear they clean more often, but in shorter bursts, spending less than 20 minutes per clean. That being said, all of our cordless vacuum cleaners do have a run-time enhancing trigger, so battery power is only used when the trigger is pushed - it is not wasted when moving from room to room or moving around obstacles.
