They hook up to the WiFi and do not need to be plugged into the modem as long as there is one central until that is. At least that’s how it works in my home. It can all be done through the Eero app.

This will be the head/gateway eero. It will create a wireless. network for your devices to connect to. Additional eero can connect to the gateway eero (wired or wirelessly) and they will broadcast the same wifi network.

Only one device needs to be plugged into the router, the other points can be placed wherever a better signal is needed. The Eero application is very helpful for the install process as it walks you through the steps and shows you how good of a signal you’ll have depending on where you place your extenders.
