The head/gateway eero must be hardwired into your internet source/modem. That gateway eero will create a wifi network for your devices, and other eero, to connect to. If the range is not enough from the one you can get additional eero, they will connect to that gateway eero, wired or wirelessly, and broadcast the same wifi network, giving much greater range. The eero do not all have to be purchased at the same time (or even be the same model), all eero will work with all other eero, so you can add to the network piecemeal as you need to.
