“everything works fine except in the room over the garage. Do I need something that plugs into modem downstairs and something in the room upstairs ? A single unit or do I buy 2 units”

What I read from other reviews & eero website, it depends on the size of your house, 1 or 2 stories, if you have dense walls, large appliances, etc. I bought the 3 pk which is more than I need for the square footage of our house, but the house is an unusual shape & is a spread out one story with brick walls. You can try the 2 pk & see how that works. We’re very happy with the eero.

Once it is in a good spot it will tell you one the app. You may want to make sure the placement of the devices gives you the optimal coverage. This is a "mesh" so it operates like a wifi net throughout the house. Your garage may be far from the last module.
