“How far down can you lower the screen? I.e. how much black is available above the projection area?”

The screen has 8” of black fabric above the actual screen This is the factory adjusted maximum. It can be decreased but the manufacturer does not give clear instructions about how to do it and the You-tube videos are not helpful either
