“is there a reason i can't operate it manually? to use the plug in i'd have to install an outlet in my ceiling which is a bit of a hassle. will pulling it up and down manually damage it or hurt performance?”

You could pull the screen down manually but you would damage the motor and not be able to put it back up manually. There are cheaper manual screens out there.
