“I have an XP440 and I just want to replace and use just the black ink, is that possible? Or I have to replace the whole cartridges which is so expensive. I don’t usually use colored print outs anyway. I like my documents plain and simple.”

You can replace the cartridges individually. I just did that myself a couple weeks ago. I have all the colored cartridges, but I pretty much only print documents. The black ink ran out, so I ordered a new one and replaced only the black cartridge.
