Can I just use black ink? null

You have the option to select BLACK print only before each print job. It will not print if the printer has only black ink in it’s black ink tank.

Hello Fred. Unfortunately not, the ET-3850 is a four-ink printer that uses Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black ink. It is designed to work with genuine Epson 502 ink bottles. Regards, Kevin - The Epson Team.
