No, ink has a system that measures to replace cartridge before it runs out. System warns you it's low, if not replaced before it says empty, the printer will not work until that cartridge is replaced, even if you only want black print. This is so the system does not go through the priming ink heads again which uses a lot of ink. It must use about 1/2 of the starter cartridges to complete the initial setting of the print heads alignment and priming. The only color with double fill ink is the black color, but I think it still uses a small amount of color ink when only printing black and white.
