Hi swamperbob, The Perfection V39 features optical 4800 x 4800 dpi resolution, so a 2" square scan would contain 9600 x 9600 pixels. Enlarging it by 4x without software interpolation would result in 2400 x 2400 pixels at 8" x 8". As long as the object you are scanning is flat, the focus should be good. If the object you want to scan is not perfectly flat, consider a scanner with a CCD sensor, like the Epson Perfection V600. At the time of this response the V600 is available at BestBuy.com.
