I'm using the Mac "Printers and Scanners" application with the V39. It has a setting to "detect enclosing box" which takes a guess at cropping. You can ask for an overview pre-scan then manually adjust the cropping. It will also "detect separate items" so you might place several photos on the scanner and it will scan them as individual files. If you do an overview first, you have the option to adjust the angles and cropping so the photos don't have to be perfectly straight. To do this, it will move the scanner head once for each photo. It's not the fastest, but I like it.
