“I have removed all protective materials and am going thru set up... error says protective materials may be left in printer... there is nothing there but it won't clear.”

Every panel that opens in any way has coverings. Including the keypad, Paper trays need to be set. Protective pieces where ink cartridges go. Double check, because it sounds like you missed one. Also check the scanner panel and flat bed area.
