You leave the switch on that controls the light fixture. Then you can control it via the app. You can turn on the lights, adjust brightness, schedule times for lights to be on, or you can just leave it on motion detection.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.By default the lights are off unless something triggers them, however I have set my lights to be on after dusk at a dimmed state until there is a trigger and then they brighten up. So the answer is yes to both of your questions.

If you enable the option "Motion triggered lights" on the app, the lights would turn on when motion is detected at night; the light would turn off when the motion ends.
