• I haven't had it long enough to do updates but I image you will eventually need a computer and a phone is a must to track and view stats. So yes.

• You will need to have some electronic device to pair to the fitbit (phone or computer). This will allow you to install the firmware as well as look at data in a different way (rather than on the device). the charging is done through usb, to the proprietary charging mechanism, so you will need some wall or car usb slot for that (if you dont have computer).

• It can be operated without a phone or computer but you really can't program or see your results without. So I would say- probably not really.
