I've found that 2 hours is plenty of time for a full charge and an hour will charge it well enough to get you through the day and then some. I've heard a lot of people say they charge it during their showers (since it is NOT water proof anyway) and continue to charge it while they get ready after the shower. As for knowing when to charge it, on the app it will tell you what your battery level is. Otherwise it will only notify you it needs to be charged when it's almost dead.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you download the fitbit app it will tell you how full your battery is! You keep it on the charger until all dots are solid. When they are charging they will blink.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The lights will flash for awhile in a specific pattern (see the user manual) as a warning that the charge is getting low (sort of like the chirping of a typical smoke detector). If not charged soon thereafter, the device will simply turn off. You may not know it if this happens until you realize that nothing is being recorded. Charging is pretty fast (less than two hours): you can follow the progress by the number of lights lit. It is fully charged when all five are solidly lit. But note that the device must be placed just one way in the charger, with contacts inserted toward the cord and the display facing visibly up. If it seems hard the insert, it is not oriented correctly. Also be VERY CAREFUL removing and reinserting the device to/from the wrist band. The band's glued joint at the display window is very fragile and easily broken, causing the band to fall apart without warning. This joint cannot be effectively re-glued, and replacement bands can be expensive.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. On your APP, it will show battery life. I charge it when I am in the shower, and it will charge battery a bit. After a few days, it is back to full charge.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The app lets you know how low the battery is getting. It usually takes a few hours to charge.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There is a battery level monitor in the app/software. It usually has to be charged every 5-7 days. You know when it is fully charged when all 5 lights are lit up when plugged in.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you have the app on your phone or tablet, you can set notifications to let you know when it needs to be charged. Then when you have it charging, it is done charging when you see all the bars lighting up. It usually only takes me a few hours to charge it.
