The lights can be triggered by motion within a wider area than what the camera captures or records. Motion detection range on Ring devices is up to around 30 feet with the motion sensitivity slider at the maximum level. You can adjust the light sensitivity within the Ring app. We recommend mounting the device at 9 feet above ground level for optimal performance.
