I got a free trial for Apple Music and Apple News with a recent purchase in November. I was emailed a code to redeem the free trial, and it said the code would expire January 31st. So it appears that the trial doesn’t start until you register with the code provided, and they give you a generous window of time to sign up. Hope that helps.
