• Hi, Lola! The increase in width is due to the necessity for the installation of the side panels. The adjustable side panels will take the minimum width to 23 inches. ~Ashton

• A/c unit itself is 16" but when side panels are installed it will be 22". If your window is smaller than minimum you can cut the side panels so they make the total width less than 22".
