Hi, Sierra! This dishwasher has a coarse and fine filter system that should capture food particles and prevent them from entering the system. The filter and glass trap are located at the bottom of the tub, under the spray arm, and should be cleaned regularly of any debris. The drain hose can be connected to an existing garbage disposal for draining. ~Ashton
