Of course this is only my guess, but I would say that the machine uses only the smallest amount of water to wash a load; therefore, it has to run for extended lengths of time in order to get the dirtiest dishes clean. I've gotten used to this with my energy efficient/water-conservative clothes washer. I guess it's just a sign of the times.
