“My old refrigerator was an older version of this one & the handles stick out into the walkway (I always hit them). I guess my question is, are the handles necessary, is there easy access to the refrigerator & freezer without the handles?”

Hi, Michelle! Technically, you can open the doors just by pulling at an edge, but we do recommend avoiding trying to pull from the rubber gasket. Prolonged tugging can damage the seal over time and cause cooling issues. If you do choose to take off the handles, be sure you open the doors by gripping the door itself and not the gasket. ~Ashton

You would have to open either side by pulling at the top of either door. The handles do like they could off with a special tool. Looks like 6 sided screw holes

You can pull from the top of the door to open it without the hamdles

If your tall remove the handles otherwise it will be very difficult to open without handles.
