all a/c's will eventually need refrigerant. but 12 foot ceilings is your first problem. by a new a/c. the energy wasted is not worth while unless you dont pay electricity. you're in a studio, get a 10000 btu unit.

The 5000 btu unit that you are asking about is made for a small bedroom (as you mentioned), approximate 10x10 or 10x12 with normal ceiling height. Even if the unit did happen to be low on refrigerant, it would not be able to cool your apartment if it were full. I would say at mininmum you would need a unit twice as large if not bigger to keep your apartment at a comfortable temperature. You can always call 1-800-Frigidaire if you need further help in slecting which size unit would work best
