Yes you can. You don't have to connect the water dispenser and can just use ice cube trays in that ice dispenser area. I bought some covered ice cube trays from a local store. They were frozen solid within 20 hours. With the covers on, there is still plenty of room to add a few other items in that large tray and still keep your cubes clean.
