it does not need any counter top piece at the back. It is made to be flush with the wall. I do have a backsplash on the back wall but it is not recommended however it will be much easier to clean splatters. Unless you have a cut out inside the wall for the plug there will be a slight gap between the stove and wall which is roughly 1 inch
