• Maybe you are looking at the GB on the iMac drive. Not the external?

• Not sure why that happened to you. Mine came right up with my iMac. No formatting required. Could you have accidentally partitioned it thinking it needed formatting? If not, it was in a sealed box correct? Make sure that you are not reading how much was already loaded onto it when it shipped too. Otherwise call The manufacturer or Geek Squad.
