Yes, it works in Italy and all countries in Europe. The maps are current to within about one month (I got this info when talking with Garmin tech support). Note, however, you cannot update the City Navigator maps for a lifetime like you can on your Garmin device. If you are going to travel in Europe a year or more from today you might need to buy another City Maps at that time.
