• Only time wifi is needed is when you want to sync dash camera gallery to Garmin Vault (Cloud Storage Plan). Otherwise, wireless connection is between the dash camera and the smartphone via Garmin Drive App.

• It operates off of its own built-in Wi-Fi. Connection stability is mixed. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it sucks, but you do not need Wi-Fi for the camera to operate while driving. The only time you need to use the built-in Wi-Fi is when you're downloading videos or setting up the camera.
