It does it automatically, but only when you are approaching a multi-lane fork in the road, like a freeway exit, and the GPS wants to highlight the correct lane to be in.

When on a route that contains an area compatible with Active Lane Guidance, the device will switch to split-screen view. On the left will appear the standard map, indicating your route as usual. The right half of the screen will display a moving lane animation with a purple line that will indicate the way the driver should navigate. Thanks, James
