This model will be able to acquire a satellite signal in Central and South America and display your location, however, it does not have any detailed street maps for Central and South America installed.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Garmins come preloaded with maps of the continental USA. So once you take them out of country, they have no function. But I believe Garmin does have map software available for other countries if you want it. Of course this comes at a price and you will probably have to add an SD card to increase your memory space. The no signal question is a good one. My educated guess would be without access to a GPS satellite signal, any ground GPS device will go flat. They only work as long as you have a signal.
