Is a smartphone required? null

No...easy set up and the directions have been spot on. We took are first driving trip from Wisconsin to Florida and no issues. Like that it shows all the hotels, restaurants and gas stations at all the exits. Would recommend especially at the price!!

I did not use a smartphone with the Garmin. Plug it in charging cord and attach to windshield and it shows you the way. Enough warning to get over to correct lane for turning.
