You go to www.garmin.com and download their software Garmin Express. Install it, and then USB hook up your Garmin 50LM to your computer. Garmin Express will update your unit if there is new update available. Garmin usually has new update once every several weeks.

To apply updates to your Garmin device, you need to download Garmin Express application from http://www.garmin.com/express and install on non mobile device such as PC or Mac computer. Use USB cable that was included with your Garmin device to connect Garmin device to computer. Garmin update takes about hour to apply map update.

The program should see your gps and it will let you know what updates you need. I just bought this for my wife and I did the updates which took about 2 hours but had no glitches. The voice command is great. Still exploring the many other things it can do. Lots of luck, happy New Year.

The process can be started here: www.garmin.com/express Software updates are released as-needed, and are not on a particular schedule. Map updates are released several times per year. After your device has been saved in the Garmin Express program, the program will let you know whenever updates are available for your device. -MH

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Every Garmin I've ever purchased, I have always updated the software out of the box. I just couldn't determine if the device is up to date or not. This will take several hours, so let it run over night. There's the Garmin Express software you'll download from Garmin's website and update the device by connecting it to your computer - usb cable is usually included in the box. The last time I checked (not recently), you can update 4 times a year with the lifetime map option
