NO, the power cord is also an antenna for traffic alerts. Only need you cell phone to get calls and text messages on screen for hands free calling. Other features are available if you download the DriveSmart app to your phone. It comes ready to use but there was a map and firmware update available that I downloaded before using it in car. Updates are free.

No, a subscription is not require to use the Garmin DriveSmart 65 & Traffic. Just simply connect the device to the provided power cable and allow the device to acquire satellites to begin using it.

If you do, I’m not aware of it. Except for the fact it took forever to set up, I love it! Setup took so long because unlike my previous garmins, it did not ask what section of the United States I wanted, so it downloaded all! It is so easy to read, which is why I purchased it in the first place.
