• No it does not need a separate cable for traffic updates. Instead it pairs with the free Garmin Drive app you load on your phone and uses the phone network to get traffic updates and more. It is a better system than the embedded antenna in the power cord. But you will have to have the app open (can be in the background) on the phone for it to work. And since it is using location on the phone as well you will want to make sure your phone is charging to not drain the battery. It is not an issue for short trips but you will need the phone charging for longer trips for sure.
