• Yes, you do need a smartphone. The GPS receives updates through an app you have to download on your phone.

• Yes, u need ur smartphone to enable this feature. The Garmin relies on ur phone to receive such information.

• It does it on its own also, but doesn't update it as often as it does when connected to a phone.

• The traffic notifications are more frequent and offered within a wider coverage area when using the Drive App, However, you can use the built in receiver to get traffic notifications even when not connected to the Drive App.
