• No, you do not. The device is preloaded with mapping and ready to use right out of the box. It is necessary to connect to a computer, in order to register and update the maps and software, but this is not a requirement for use, and can be done when convenient for you. Thanks for asking! *CG

• I believe this would be a good idea as when I first plugged my GPS into the laptop I saw that there were updated maps to download.
