In reverse order: Yes, you can mount it on your windshield, which is where mine is mounted. It comes with everything you'd need to do that. The model is portable, but I believe it only holds a 2 hour charge. So yes, you can switch it to walking directions and carry it with you, but if you're going to be gone longer than 2 hours, you'd need to bring the charging cord.

Please try again later.The Nuvi is designed and set up for driving directions, but should work okay for short walks because it shows a graphic of a street map and your route (a magenta colored line ahead of your current location). It's really easy to input a destination address. However its fully charged battery lasts for only about an hour and a half. For hiking, the better GPS unit might be the Garmin E-Trex 20 or 30, but they don't show roads and streets with as much accuracy or detail, in my experience. The Nuvi comes with a ball & socket mount with suction cup that will stick to glass.
