• No, it does not have to be charged. It will work out of the box if you connect to a power source, such as the car charger. That being said, we would highly recommend connecting to a computer first and checking for map and software updates for the device using Garmin Express (http://garmin.com/express). \tw/

• Yup. take it out of the box and use it. Mine worked without charge but I always use the cigarette plug. Works great abnd highly recommend.
