Please try again later.Sorry I misread the question, I thought it read can a GPS be used in the ocean, instead of "this GPS" My answer would be No, because it is not loaded with the proper software for offroad use, but they make them for boats which would be suitable for oceans! Before GPS units were developed boats and ships used the Loran system which was similiar except it didn't have a visual screen and depended on coordinance numbers!!

Please try again later.As far as I know GPS units were used on boats before they were mass marketed for cars, I had one on my boat at least 5 years before I was aware they sold them for autos. My Garmin GPS enabled me to fish on Lake Erie 5 miles from shore and return after dark when I couldn't see the landmarks which help find the way back during the day! So my answer is definately YES!!!
