A device may not have the latest version of mapping loaded to it out of the box, however, you can connect the device to a computer and use the Garmin Express program to load the latest mapping as soon as you purchase it. I just bought a new Garmin and registered my new device. I also clicked on a link for any map updates. I got a message on my screen that said there are no updates.
