Having life time updates means that you don't have to pay for the updates they are included in the initial purchase price. To update your garmin gps you will have to connect the small wire from your computer to the garmin gps unit and visit the garmin website on your computer and the updates will come from garmin to your computer and the wire will carry this information into you garmin unit at no extra charge. Your garmin gps will not talk to the garmin company until you connect it with the provided small wire included in your garmin box. good luck from the musician
